Welcome to the MetroNet CANACHAT Echomail Conference
====================================================
This conference is "owned" by the MetroNet email network and is gated
to FidoNet under the auspices of the Internet Gateway Policy of 1989.
If there are any problems, please contact Joe Lindstrom (see below).
=======================================================================
Before I get on with the conference rules, I'd like to make a
statement. Some prominent posters in the CAN_FREECHAT echo have been
applying pressure to those sysops who carry CAN_FREECHAT to drop
this CANACHAT echo... under the assumption that this will "send a
message" to those nasty CANACHAT moderators. Boy, they must be evil
guys bent on destroying the world, huh?
The result of such action:
1) It deprives YOU of this echo, and
2) It creates new animosity between the two echoes.
Let me get one thing straight here. I FULLY believe there is room
for both echoes. In fact I strongly believed there was a NEED for
the CAN_FREECHAT echo, which caters to EXACTLY the type of traffic
we wanted to seperate out of THIS echo. The two go well TOGETHER:
there is no need for any war. I don't believe there should be any
"competition" as we're not after the same target audiences.
Be that as it may. Having said all this, I'd like you to keep your
own eyes on this situation as it develops. And if this type of
behaviour disgusts you as much as it disgusts me... and if it
continues... then maybe turnabout is fair play. Consider dropping
the CAN_FREECHAT if they don't clean up their act and stop acting
like petulant little children. (Please note that I'm referring to
SPECIFIC INDIVIDUALS and not all posters in that echo. People
like... oh, like maybe Starwolf for example...)
One last statement to make: I'd like to publicly express my sincere
gratitude to my three co-moderators, and PARTICULARLY to Mike
Jenkinson, for keeping care of this echo while I've been away from it
(far too much for my own liking). I don't just owe him a beer... I
owe him a beer store. :-)
=======================================================================
Rant mode OFF. Now, back to the conference rules:
=======================================================================
Rule #1 - The topic of this message is "Canada". It can be politics, it
can be current events, it can be anything but it *MUST* be about Canada
somehow. This is not a general chatter echo - no "hi, how are you,
how's the weather up that way?" messages please. From this point
forward, this point will be closely monitored and moderated. The
CAN_FREECHAT echo exists for exactly that type of conversation - you
can obtain a link to that echo from the same source as you receive
this one. Please consider carrying BOTH on your system.
Rule #2 - Debate the issues, not the person. Personal attacks, also
known as "flames", are NOT allowed within the echo (if you MUST
flame somebody, send them direct netmail instead, or just press the
NEXT_MSG key). This has become an extreme problem as of late: be aware
that we'll be watching this closely and taking action when needed.
Rule #3 - Messages may be posted in EITHER of Canada's official
languages, French or English. Additionally, 8-bit ASCII characters,
unlike in most echoes, ARE explicitly allowed in this echo to
accomodate our French-speaking users.
Rule #4 - Profanity is not permitted, though if the moderator is in a
good mood he may allow some MINOR stuff to slip through. If in doubt,
don't use the word.
Rule #5 - As many people use this echo as a soapbox to air their views,
we expect all participants to take responsibility for their comments:
all users are expected to use their REAL NAMES when posting in this
echo. "Handles" are not permitted. Basically, if the name appears
on your driver's licence, it's ok with us. If it doesn't, don't use
it here.
Rule #6 - There is *NO* rule six!!
Rule #7 - Other than the above, we also expect you to abide by the
Echomail Policies of both MetroNet (conference originator) and FidoNet
(primary echo distributor). Basically these rules boil down to:
A) The Moderator is GOD - get used to it, and
B) You may not gate this echo to systems outside of MetroNet and
FidoNet without prior approval. This is EASILY obtained: send
netmail or email to Joe Lindstrom.
Additionally, this echo is governed by the laws of Canada and the
United States (a necessary evil since many US-based sites are involved
in the distribution of this echo). Don't libel anybody, don't post
instructions on how to build a bomb, things like that.
=======================================================================
For your convenience, we have FOUR conference moderators. They are:

If you have a complaint about a user or sysop in this echo and their
behaviour, please send NETMAIL or EMAIL to one of the moderators so that
they can investigate. If possible, please include a copy of the
offending message (echo links aren't always reliable: we might not have
seen the offending remarks).

Ceci est la version Anglaise des règles de la conference. La version
Française serra posté par Mike Sugimoto.
